FAQs

  • It’s on Saturday, August 24th, 2024, from noon to 4:30 pm.

  • The Fat Pool Party will be held at two outdoor pools on the Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School campus in Waltham, MA. The entrance is at 785 Beaver St, Waltham, MA.

You can find photos of the pools and other spaces here.

  • The address is 785 Beaver St, Waltham, MA.

If you’re driving: After entering the Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall campus via the Beaver St. entrance, take the first right to get to Lot A, closest to the pool; if Lot A is full, the entrance to Lot B is on Lexington St. If you have reserved an accessible parking space, it will be in Lot A. Check out the parking map for more detail.

PLEASE NOTE: Parking is extremely limited, you must register when you buy your tickets, and if parking is no longer available when you purchase your tickets, you will have to make alternate arrangements (we will have a few spots reserved for those with accessibility needs, so if parking is no longer available but you have an accessibility need, please email us). If you do not register in advance, you will not be able to park on site. We strongly encourage people to carpool or take other modes of transportation, and we will endeavor to connect people for this purpose on our Facebook page. There are public lots (Church Street lot, Central Square parking deck) less than one mile away.

If you’re taking public transportation: The Waltham stop on the Fitchburg commuter rail line is approximately one mile away, the Alewife red line station is six miles away, and there are a number of bus stops within one mile.

  • Every person of every size, ability, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender expression, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race, and sexual orientation is welcome at our events.

However, because of our insurance policy, everyone must be over thirteen years of age.

We encourage those in the most marginalized bodies to come! We believe diversity benefits all of us.

  • Entry to the pool party, where we’ll have snacks, beverages, tunes, activities and games, fat-friendly vendors, fun giveaways, and an abundance of fat joy!

Although we will have free snacks and Dylan & Pete's ice cream for purchase, we encourage people to bring food for picnicking. There will also be a drop-off zone for food delivery services (order to 785 Beaver St., Waltham, MA), if you'd like to order something while you're at the party.

Check out our Fat Pool Party Layout to get the lay of the land and a schedule of activities.

  • Please bring a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, and anything else needed to make yourself comfortable outside in August. There will be some seating and some shade, but not enough for everyone.

    You might also consider bringing:

    • Fat-friendly seating

    • Portable shade (umbrellas, canopies, etc.)

    • Floats (we will have pumps on site)

    • Food – we will have free snacks and Dylan & Pete's ice cream for purchase, but we encourage people to bring food for picnicking!

    • Games

    • Pool toys

    • Hand fans or cooling devices

    • Picnic blankets

    • Coolers – BYO ice!

  • Alcohol, glass, weapons, drugs, pets, or children under thirteen.

  • There are two outdoor pools, both treated with chlorine. The lower pool is a six-lane, standard-sized competition pool, 3-9 1/2 feet deep, with step and ladder entries. The upper pool is 2-3 feet deep with a zero-entry ramp.

You can find photos of the pools and other spaces here.

  • If the event needs to be canceled for rain, we will alert all ticketholders via email. If we are able to reschedule the event, tickets will not be refunded, though may be transferred by emailing us.

  • Please email us if you have specific accessibility questions or need more information.

Pools: Access to both pools is paved and level.

    • The lower pool is between 3 1/2 and 9 feet deep and has six steps with railings to enter the water, as well as a chair lift (maximum weight 350 lbs, seat dimensions 17.75” wide by 18” long). NOTE: The chair lift is presently not working, but we hope it will be repaired in time for the event. It is accessed by a level, paved path from the adjacent parking lot to the pool deck.

    • The upper pool is between 2 and 3 feet deep and has an entry ramp with railings. It is accessed either by stairs from the lower pool or a paved walkway from the adjacent parking lot.

    • Direct access between the pools consists of fifteen stairs, with a small landing partway up. Unfortunately, there is no direct access between pool areas for those who cannot climb stairs.

    • The upper pool can also be accessed by a paved walkway from the adjacent parking lot. Please note that the walkway has an incline; we believe it is approximately fifteen degrees.

    Bathrooms and changing spaces

    • There are two accessible restrooms adjacent to each pool, with one accessible stall per restroom. The restrooms with urinal access (one on each level) each only have one stall, and it is the accessible stall.

    • There are also changing spaces adjacent to both pools.

      • The lower pool changing stalls are approximately 34.75” wide by 28” deep, and the larger, corner changing stall is 58” wide by 28” deep. These have steel doors and a solid wall. A standard-sized rollator is not able to fit through the stall doors, so those with larger mobility aids, those that may need to be seated to change, and/or those who cannot fit in the stalls are encouraged to change in the disabled bathroom stall in each restroom.

      • The upper pool has fourteen changing rooms. These changing rooms have curtains, instead of metal, for two or three of their walls, so they may be easier to change in due to flexibility in size. These stalls are approximately 31” long by 32” deep, and a larger stall in the left corner is 36” long by 32” deep.

Vendors will be just outside the lower pool, on firm turf that passed the test of rollator wheels, though the turf may be difficult to traverse if it rains beforehand.

Lawn games and picnic area will be down a hill on turf if accessed near the pool, but they can also be accessed via the parking lot, behind the gray building, in order to avoid said hill. Traversing turf is required to access this area.

Parking: Approximately half the parking for the event is located in a lot that is a seven- to ten-minute walk from the pools. Although registration is required for parking, your parking location will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis. We have reserved accessible parking spaces in Lot A, directly adjacent to the pools, so if you need accessible parking, please email us. Check out our parking map for more information.

Lifeguards will be on duty. Swim at your own risk.

If you need assistance during the event, please feel free to ask any BBB volunteer!

  • At BBB, we are intimately aware of how chronic illness, including being immunocompromised or immunosuppressed, disproportionately impacts fat people. Our number one goal is to keep our attendees safe in community with one another. In light of the current summer wave of COVID-19, we have updated our COVID policies.

Just as before, we are asking folks to consider masking whenever possible. We ask that your mask be at least a KN95 or higher quality. If you have issues accessing high quality masks, we will have them available, so please feel free to grab one! Masks will also be required in the bathrooms and changing areas, and signage (and masks!) will be up to reflect this policy. This is because both are indoor spaces where transmission is more likely to occur.

As an exercise of community care, we request that all attendees take a rapid antigen test before attending. If this isn’t feasible beforehand, we will have tests available on-site. If you test positive, or test negative but have symptoms, we ask that you please stay home. If the cost of your ticket was a hardship, and you are worried about missing out due to finances, please reach out to us, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Although we are not requiring that attendees provide proof of a negative test, anyone who does show proof of a negative test will be entered into a raffle to win one of four signed copies of “You Just Need to Lose Weight” and 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon, AKA Your Fat Friend and co-host of Maintenance Phase! Again, tests will be available on-site.

Finally, if you test positive within five days after the pool party, please email us so we can inform attendees that an anonymous attendee has tested positive. We may also ask for a brief description of where you spent most of your time during the party. We are requesting that attendees take this extra step with us so we can continue to keep our community safe and ensure that those who need this information are informed of their risk of transmission.

We know that our BBB community is a loving one on the side of care and disability justice. Thank you so much for your willingness to look out for one another during a pandemic that especially impacts our community.

  • There will be eight lifeguards on site.

  • The ticket price is $60, and our ticket tiers are $30, $60, and $75. Members of our mailing list get access to early bird tickets at a discounted price of $50!

Bigger Bodies Boston is dedicated to financial accessibility, particularly for the most marginalized members of our community. Approximately a third of the tickets for this event are available for free or at half cost. If the full ticket price is accessible for you, we very much appreciate you reserving the subsidized tickets for those who need them. If you are able and moved to contribute a little extra, any top-tier ticket purchases or additional donations will allow us to add more subsidized tickets!

If $30 is too much for you or we are out of $30 tickets, there are a couple of options: (1) We have a limited number of free tickets available; email us if you need one! (No need to provide an explanation as to why, just let us know that you need free admission to the party and we will do our best to accommodate.) (2) We may still need volunteers! Volunteers get free admission and will work no more than half of the party. You must be able to lift and carry. Inquire here

  • Tickets are not refundable, but all purchased tickets (full price, half price, and more to love) are transferable; email us to transfer. If you have a free ticket that you are not using, please let us know so we can offer it to someone on our waitlist.

  • There are 300 tickets available, in addition to spots for volunteers.

  • The Fat Pool Party is organized by Bigger Bodies Boston, an all-volunteer group of local fat liberation activists and now an official nonprofit organization!

  • (1) Our costs have gone up! (2) Last year we did not make enough to fully cover the cost of the event.

We set ticket prices with the goal of covering the cost of the event, not making money. Bigger Bodies Boston is an all-volunteer organization, and any budget shortfalls are paid out of the pockets of our volunteer leadership. Any funds received over the cost of the pool party will be used to cover our administrative costs or will go towards future events.

Bigger Bodies Boston is dedicated to financial accessibility. We run free events whenever possible, most recently Fat Beach Day in July (grant-funded) and Big Fat Karaoke Night in April (space donated by First Parish Malden, remaining costs covered by leadership). If you’re able and interested, please consider donating to help us reduce future event costs or sponsoring this or a future event (email us if you’re interested).

  • (1) Join our waitlist! If anyone drops out, you’ll be the first to know.

    (2) We may still need volunteers! Volunteers get free admission and will work no more than half of the party. You must be able to lift and carry. Inquire here.
